People always ask: How much weight can you lose in a week?” Well… to answer your question I have good news, awesome news, and bad news.

First onto the good news: YOU CAN LOSE A TON OF WEIGHT IN ONE WEEK

That’s right, you don’t have to be bound to the conventional wisdom of only losing 1 or 2 pounds a week. Extreme weight loss diets can definitely work, but only for a short period of time.

In fact, you can lose up to 15 pounds in one week if you do it correctly.

Now onto the awesome news: ALL THAT WEIGHT YOU LOSE WILL BE WATER AND FAT, NOT MUSCLE

Yup, you read that correctly, if you follow the methods at the end of this post, all the weight you lose during the week will be pure body fat. The conventional statement that losing more than 2 pounds per week leads to muscle, organ, and hair loss is absolute unicorn shit.

How do I know this? Because some awesome scientists from the American College Of Nutrition back in 1999, conducted a study, which tested 2 groups of people for 12 weeks.

One group only did traditional cardio, while the other group only did weight training. Both groups ate 800 calories a day. At the end of the study, both groups lost large amounts of weight, but the one that only did cardio lost large amounts of lean muscle mass, and the one that only did weight training didn’t lose any muscle mass at all.

So there you go, some hard hitting scientific facts that prove that you will not lose muscle during extreme dieting as long as you lift weights.

Note: And if you don’t have a gym membership or if you don’t have access to any weights, then doing a well-designed bodyweight program like Bodyweight Burn is your next best option.

And lastly, the bad news: YOU HAVE TO EAT VERY VERY LOW CALORIES

So yeah…. you have to eat a ridiculously low amount of calories to lose a lot of weight in a week. I’m talking along the lines of 800 calories a day.

The amount that would make any nutritionist hang themselves.

The 2-step plan to lose the maximum amount of weight in a week

Please note that the following plan can be used by both men and woman.

And don’t do this plan if you’re under 18, you’re way too young to be eating such low calories.

I guarantee that if you follow the plan below, you will lose 10-15 pounds(water and fat) in one week:

1) For one week only, eat 800 calories per day.

2) Workout 2-3 times per week with weights. Make sure the weights are heavy and be sure to hit all body parts.

That’s all.

Some notes/tips about the above 2 steps:

  • 800 calories is very little food, for any man, woman, or baby walrus. Because of this, I suggest that you only eat 1 meal per day a la Brad Pilon’s Eat Stop Eat. If you eat one 800 calorie meal per day, then you’ll at least feel somewhat satisfied, but if you split that up into 3 or even worse, 6 meals per day, then you’re not going to fare so well on this one week venture. Yes, this means that you will be fasting 24 hours every day for a whole week. Just remember, you will be burning fat, not muscle.
  • Whenever possible, eat higher protein and eat foods with high water content such as fruits and soups. Also, drink lots of coffee and green tea, since they both tend to blunt hunger quite well.
  • Stick with heavy compound exercises when in the gym. That means no curling and crunching, and if you even step foot on a treadmill, my dumbass radar will go off and I may have to kill you.
  • If you can’t lift weights, then your next best option is to do some sort of bodyweight training. You know…exercises like squats, push-ups, lunges, pull-ups, sit-ups, etc..
  • This is a mental game more than anything else. When you’re eating very few calories to lose weight faster, your mind starts playing tricks on you. Your stomach is gonna be grumbling more often. And there are gonna be times where you want nothing more than to self-sabotage yourself. Which is why the next point is so important.
  • Above all, keep yourself distracted and out of the kitchen. If you’re constantly prancing around the kitchen and thinking about food, you’re going to fail. So keep yourself busy. Read a book, play some video games, take a nap, work on your tan, or shave your pubes. I don’t care. Just do something that doesn’t involve food.
  • [EDIT 10/6/2014] I should also add that your protein intake needs to be HIGH. Like really high. In fact, the majority of your calories should probably come from protein, fruits, and veggies if you want this diet to be effective. The protein will help keep you full but more importantly also help maintain muscle.

Remember, this is only for one week

I just wanted remind you all, that this sort of extreme weight loss plan is only a temporary plan.

The results don’t have to be temporary, but the plan is. Please do not try and do this weight loss plan for more than a week.

Doing so is really going to mess with your head and you’ll most likely binge back to your original weight.

After one week, transition to a more moderate weight loss plan for the long haul.

  1. And what is your advise how much should i eat after this one week diet to not gain back the weight?
    should i ad small amounts of calories slowly? and how much?
    this all sounds to good to be true lol so im kinda scared that i will gain it all back.
    Im asking is it posible to eat normaly (normal calorie intake) again and stay at my new weight? 🙂

    1. typically a 12x your bodyweight in pounds as a starting point. And you will probably gain back a tiny bit of weight, but don’t freak out it will just be water weight.

  2. Hi I started slimming world in January 2015 and from then to now I’ve lost 2 stone and 7lbs. I have a target to get to by May 29th 2015 and have to get to 11 stone, and am 12 stone 7lbs now. Am having a op done and I have to get to this target as this will be a one off opportunity for me, if doing this plan a couple of times through till may, will this lose me a lot of weight. As am only loosing 2-3 lbs a week now as its slowed right down?

  3. Ive just finished shedding ten stone, gone from a size 22 to a 12 and I did this in just 4 months. My eating went bad due to unknown health issues which meant I was only able to eat porridge without it sending me to A and E. When I realsied I had lost weight, two stone infact without even known motivated me into adding exercise into the mix. I walked for half an hour a day, that was it! Then I upped it to an hour, the weight kept coming off which ends up being addictive as hell when you start seeing the results. People were amazed at how fast it was coming off. Although these methods aren’t safe they do work and ive managed to keep the weight off since, haven’t gained a single lb. give these a go in week long bursts, one week do it the following week eat s little more but exercise then back to 800 a day the following week. Only you can make yourself slim, I hated being fat and yet did nothing about it but gurned if someone called me fat. Trust me when I say once u start seeing results you will carry on and carry on there’s no stopping you. This way or the other diets any weight loss is good weight loss right? And only you can do it and make it to the skinny finish line and it’s the best feeling ever

  4. You should get some slim pasta, it really fills you up and is only like 9 calories. I have half a pack with some weight watchers sauce and quorn mince, or they do slim rice which I have with a bit of in the jar tikka masala sauce and quorn chicken. fills you up but you do need a sauce as the pasta is bland and rubbery

    Im a male 6ft 2in nd i weigh 91kg iv been on a diet where i eat 6 eggwhites by1 pm and 6 again by 8pm but iv read so much about loosing muscle it got me worreid so im trying to take enough protein so i drink 2x a day 30gramms whey protein with skimmed milk iv lost some weight but im worreid about d muscle part

  6. I’ve been eating once to sometimes not at all per day…!! I already dropped 13kgs… but to me it will never be enough!!! I just want to know exactly the amount of what types of food we have to eat everyday please… cause I’m to scared to eat!!!!

    1. Hi. in a day you need carbs, not alot of fats, dairy, and protein not to mention sugars. That fact that you are scared to eat and do not know what an average person needs to eat on a day to day basis clearly proves to me that you have anorexia, you may not feel like you are, but not eating and fearing food is completely what the disease is. And please do not think that I am just saying this because i am a know it all, which i am not, i know a lot about the disease because I suffer from it myself, recently I fell further down the road and became bulimic, everyone thinks I am fine because i have alot of muscle and i eat now, but the thing is, i spend hours in the kitchen picking bits of food, such as low fat bars and throwing the rest away, then I will have one spoon from a yogurt pot then freeze it, then i will sit at the table open draws to look at food i wont dare put my mouth around then shut it again and resist myself. I don’t know how long you have been starving yourself for, but it is the worst, and bulimia isn’t better either. i see a counseler for my Bulimia, but i barely see her much, shes a busy woman. Please find someone to help you, its so horrible I have been this way for a year.

  7. This is my first ever time dieting! (I know insane) I’ve also never set foot in a gym! I have hit 27 and the weight doesn’t want to come off so easy. So I wanted to shed the last little baby weight after having my little girl. I’m 5″4 and currently weight 11stone. I wanted to get back down to my original weight of 9stone.

    What exercise would be best? I have an exercise bike! Haha would that be ok to do while I’m on this diet? I’m totally dumb to all this dieting and exercising.

  8. I went over what you wrote and I have questions. First, I’ve read that muscles would add pounds to your weights and you said we have to left weights. Thus, how can I avoid that point? I’ve exercised and yes I gained weight (not form calories, but from muscles). Second, why would be there no crunching and running on the trade mill?

      Are you saying lifting will make you gain weight? Yes it very well could, but you’ll be putting on muscle not fat which won’t make you look bad.

        1. you won’t gain much if any in one week especially since you’re in an extreme deficit.

          No crunches is unnecessary for most at this calorie level. You can add in a few sets if you really want but do them on a decline so you don’t screw up your back.

          2. if you have large thighs, it’s probably a simple matter of losing some weight. The weight will come off your thigh, eventually.

So is there ny thing else I can try?The reason why I’m home schooled is because I was bullied t school for I was ‘fat’,I hate my self for who I’m and I seriously want to lose this big brick off me.I belong from such a country in which food is very important and we eat a lot!I have realy lazy since I left school 2-almost 3yrs now but go for walk for 30-35min once or twice week but I need a meal plan to help me.hope u can help me.

        1. you can try to start eating healthier. Try to stop eating so much processed foods and just aim to eat more fruits, veggies, lean meats.

  10. Hey Keith, let s assume we eat 800cal x day and loose the desired amount of weight/fat…after 7 days, should we add up cals slowly e.g. 100-200 cal extra each week, or just jump to BWx13 for mantainance?

  11. I am 123lb and my height is 150 cm, but I feel like the biggest part of my body is my thigh. So, i wanna a slim and toned thigh. So, I’m wondering if the stepper would help me to reach my goal.

    1. it’s impossible to spot reduce.

      You can build muscle in only your thighs, but you can’t target fat loss in your thighs.

I have been taking a weightloss protein supplement and I’ve lost about 3lbs in close to a week in a half I’ve cut down to 1200 calories a day and drinking about 80Fl.Oz of water a day im trying to shed about 15-20lbs if i lose more that would be great i try to walk about two miles a day and im gonna give this diet a chance its for only a week and 800 calories a day i know i can do it thank you for the information wish me Luck!!

  14. Hi, I’ve got dumbbells but any suggestions for other weight exercises for other parts of the body or will just arms be ok. Also is it OK to still drink as much water as possible. Plus any chance of having that large costa coffee a day?

    1. no you should train your whole body. Yes as much water as you want is fine. Coffee is fine as long as it’s black.
