People always ask: How much weight can you lose in a week?” Well… to answer your question I have good news, awesome news, and bad news.

First onto the good news: YOU CAN LOSE A TON OF WEIGHT IN ONE WEEK

That’s right, you don’t have to be bound to the conventional wisdom of only losing 1 or 2 pounds a week. Extreme weight loss diets can definitely work, but only for a short period of time.

In fact, you can lose up to 15 pounds in one week if you do it correctly.

Now onto the awesome news: ALL THAT WEIGHT YOU LOSE WILL BE WATER AND FAT, NOT MUSCLE

Yup, you read that correctly, if you follow the methods at the end of this post, all the weight you lose during the week will be pure body fat. The conventional statement that losing more than 2 pounds per week leads to muscle, organ, and hair loss is absolute unicorn shit.

How do I know this? Because some awesome scientists from the American College Of Nutrition back in 1999, conducted a study, which tested 2 groups of people for 12 weeks.

One group only did traditional cardio, while the other group only did weight training. Both groups ate 800 calories a day. At the end of the study, both groups lost large amounts of weight, but the one that only did cardio lost large amounts of lean muscle mass, and the one that only did weight training didn’t lose any muscle mass at all.

So there you go, some hard hitting scientific facts that prove that you will not lose muscle during extreme dieting as long as you lift weights.

Note: And if you don’t have a gym membership or if you don’t have access to any weights, then doing a well-designed bodyweight program like Bodyweight Burn is your next best option.

And lastly, the bad news: YOU HAVE TO EAT VERY VERY LOW CALORIES

So yeah…. you have to eat a ridiculously low amount of calories to lose a lot of weight in a week. I’m talking along the lines of 800 calories a day.

The amount that would make any nutritionist hang themselves.

The 2-step plan to lose the maximum amount of weight in a week

Please note that the following plan can be used by both men and woman.

And don’t do this plan if you’re under 18, you’re way too young to be eating such low calories.

I guarantee that if you follow the plan below, you will lose 10-15 pounds(water and fat) in one week:

1) For one week only, eat 800 calories per day.

2) Workout 2-3 times per week with weights. Make sure the weights are heavy and be sure to hit all body parts.

That’s all.

Some notes/tips about the above 2 steps:

  • 800 calories is very little food, for any man, woman, or baby walrus. Because of this, I suggest that you only eat 1 meal per day a la Brad Pilon’s Eat Stop Eat. If you eat one 800 calorie meal per day, then you’ll at least feel somewhat satisfied, but if you split that up into 3 or even worse, 6 meals per day, then you’re not going to fare so well on this one week venture. Yes, this means that you will be fasting 24 hours every day for a whole week. Just remember, you will be burning fat, not muscle.
  • Whenever possible, eat higher protein and eat foods with high water content such as fruits and soups. Also, drink lots of coffee and green tea, since they both tend to blunt hunger quite well.
  • Stick with heavy compound exercises when in the gym. That means no curling and crunching, and if you even step foot on a treadmill, my dumbass radar will go off and I may have to kill you.
  • If you can’t lift weights, then your next best option is to do some sort of bodyweight training. You know…exercises like squats, push-ups, lunges, pull-ups, sit-ups, etc..
  • This is a mental game more than anything else. When you’re eating very few calories to lose weight faster, your mind starts playing tricks on you. Your stomach is gonna be grumbling more often. And there are gonna be times where you want nothing more than to self-sabotage yourself. Which is why the next point is so important.
  • Above all, keep yourself distracted and out of the kitchen. If you’re constantly prancing around the kitchen and thinking about food, you’re going to fail. So keep yourself busy. Read a book, play some video games, take a nap, work on your tan, or shave your pubes. I don’t care. Just do something that doesn’t involve food.
  • [EDIT 10/6/2014] I should also add that your protein intake needs to be HIGH. Like really high. In fact, the majority of your calories should probably come from protein, fruits, and veggies if you want this diet to be effective. The protein will help keep you full but more importantly also help maintain muscle.

Remember, this is only for one week

I just wanted remind you all, that this sort of extreme weight loss plan is only a temporary plan.

The results don’t have to be temporary, but the plan is. Please do not try and do this weight loss plan for more than a week.

Doing so is really going to mess with your head and you’ll most likely binge back to your original weight.

After one week, transition to a more moderate weight loss plan for the long haul.

  1. If someone wanted to do the 1 meal a day approach for longer than 7 days what would you recommend they bump their calories up to?

  2. I have decided to go 10 days on 20 cals a day the 20 cals are from 0 sugar cola. Before I had to have my female reproduction system removed due to ovarian cancer I weighed 8 stone 3 pounds. That operation cured the cancer +plus a lot of chemo and steroids. But I felt so healthy and active at that weight my hight is 5ft 7in. Now I weigh an awful 16 stone 1lb and feel awful due to this huge weight gain. I only eat once a day (always have done since I was about 17 yrs old)I’m totally fed up with diets that make me gain weight!!I plan on drinking 4 litres of diet cola a day with glucose free hydration salts added to 1 or 2 drinks. I am not very active due to my weight which is also the cause of my knee and joint pain. But hope to start to become more active with the more weight I lose.

    1. Whoa, 20 calories? I don’t recommend that. I’m unfamiliar with your cancer but 20 calories per day is never a good idea.

    2. …diet soda is bad for you. 20 calories a day is called an eating disorder. Sorry for being so blunt but please educate yourself in healthy weight loss… Also, seeing as you are a cancer survivor which is awesome by the way, you really don’t want to do this to your body. Cancer can cause weight gain unfortunately, due to inactivity while taking treatment. Most people think it’s the opposite but it’s not! Your body needs nutrients, especially if u want to remain cancer free. If what you seek is merely to lose a few pounds and be healthy then you should be eating a healthy diet full of protein and vegetables and limited carbs. Weight train… lift those weights girl!! If you weight train 3 times a week…eating a normal healthy diet.. your body will grow muscle which means your body will burn more energy while your at rest which means the lbs of fat will fall right off of you. Also.. your metabolism slows down when u don’t eat often.. eat 4-6 smaller meals a day… get that metabolism pumping. You will be successful but please do it with your health in mind. You might shred some fat and muscle on your 20 cal 10 days.. but as soon as you stop all that weight u lose in 10 days might actually double. It’s unwise.

      it has been proven and backed up that diet coke does actually cause weight gain. only have in moderation.
      i survive on 300-400 calories a day. sometimes even fast (o calorie days) and i find the trick to losing weight is eat healthy!!!! so vegetables, protein, fruit. NO CARBS! NO SUGAR! and have as little dairy as possible. have smaller portions, and you can easily shrink your stomach down.
      You know what they say, abs are made in the kitchen.

    1. Don’t do this if you’re 17 and weigh 114. Focus on simply making better food choices and probably start doing some resistance training if you’re not already.

  3. Hi I’m new to dieting I’ve been eating less than 1,500 calories a day for a week and I’ve only lost 1 pound , I want to try this 800 calories a day for a week but I’m not really sure what to eat like I said I’m new to this please help , thank you!

    1. I personally think that two packs of ramen noodles is very satisfying for my hunger. That would be about 760 calories. One whole pack is about 380 calories, which is two servings. One serving is suppose to be half a pack at 190 calories. And, although this may not be healthy, there’s these frozen burritos I buy that has about 750 calories. But, they’re not like the tiny frozen burritos for $0.50 cents, they’re very large and quite stuffed. One of those can satisfy my hunger. El Monterey XX Large. Of course there aren’t much other nutrients for those options, but, they’re usually satisfying for hunger and under 800 calories. A serving of some cereal and skim milk isn’t much, either. Or, those plastic bowls of cereal that have one serving inside.

    2. Try eating some what paleo, protein, fruits and vegetables. For example, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with 1/2 cup of fruit for breakfast. Green smoothie for lunch, 1 cup celery sticks w/2 tbl almond butter for snack, and 4oz turkey tenderloin with sautéed green beans for dinner. Thats about 900 calories. Gives you your daily nutrients so you have energy and focus.

  5. Has anyone done this completely and can tell me what results came about? I have three weeks to lose some weight so my plan is to ease myself into it. For example, this week I’ll do 1000 cal days, then next week I’ll do 900 cal days and then down to 800 on the 3rd week but stop on Thursday instead of a full week. Do you think that work okay or would that be extremely too unhealthy?

    1. I have done this for about a month an haven’t lost that much weight. I eat high protein diet. Isogenix shake in the morning and chicken with veggies for lunch and dinner. I drink tons of water no pop, carbs or sweets. I work out about 3 – 4 times a week with weights and I also do cardio.

      I HAVE done this, and YES, YES, YES, it works! I was doing it in order to try to lose 7-10 lbs for a bridesmaid dress, and I did. As I understand it, this plan is a Kickstart, it is NOT a sustainable diet, and healthy, LIFE LONG diet (by this I mean healthy foods, not diet as in drastically lowering caloric intake) and exercise changes need to be implemented after this kickstart!
      Following this 7 day program, I drastically cut my white sugar intake, (along with processed foods) and started a strange workout combo (free weights, and yoga) and I’ve NEVER felt better!! It all started with this 7 day Kickstart, so good luck to you! 🙂

  7. Good day would i loose weight if i already eat just one meal a day and do excerises like lunges and squads. Ive been doing a 3 week excersising and my weight have completely stalled.

  8. I used to weigh 122 (I’m 5’6″ and that’s my general weight where I feel best) and I’ve been binging on sweets. I probably weigh around 130 now and I’m going to Hawaii in a month and need to shed these extra pounds and get a flat tummy again. Hope this works :/

  9. I dunno guys, I’ve always been a big believer in the ‘reap what you sow’ vibe and by that I mean eat whatever you want all day but just factor in like 6 or 7 tactical voms like a basic bitch. It’s hard to be pretty and also skinny, I used to think you had to choose, before I descovered the tactical vom, now I don’t have to choose now I can be both, it’s fabulous. It’s actually quite an easy routine to get into the first few are tough like Tori Black taking on 5 yards spread over multiple throbbing members, it’s not going to start or end well but the middle might be ok.

  10. I am seriously considering this diet. But worried 800 calories a day might be a huge challenge when i am at school all day and work after. Would appetite suppressing pills help this? let me know asap…desperate :/
